Stroke Program

The Tulane Stroke Program specializes in the treatment of acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and in the prevention of stroke through education, medical therapy, and evaluation of vascular disease.

The Tulane Stroke Program is certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center, the first in Orleans Parish.  This means that we have proved to a national accreditation body that we consistently meet and/or surpass national standardized guidelines for the care of stroke patients.  The American Heart Association has also awarded the Tulane Medical Center Stroke Program with its “Gold Plus” recognition, the highest achievement awarded and one of only 2 Stroke Programs in Louisiana with ‘Gold Plus’ recognition.

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the number one cause of adult disability in America….A stroke or “brain attack” occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery (blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body and brain) or an artery breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain. When either of these events occur, brain cells begin to die and damage occurs.

When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost. These abilities can include speech, movement, vision, coordination and memory. How a stroke patient is affected depends on what part of the brain is damaged and how much of the brain is affected.
